HONG KONG—Two U.S. Navy ships completed a passage through the waters between Taiwan and mainland China on Wednesday, drawing criticism from Beijing and reviving a question that has nagged at supporters of the island’s democracy: Is the U.S., under the leadership of President Trump, fully committed to Taiwan’s survival?
Trump has yet to detail his policy toward Taiwan. Beijing considers the self-ruled island to be Chinese territory, to be taken by force if necessary—a lingering threat that brings tension to any military activity in the Taiwan Strait.
