Rebuilding of Gaza will begin very soon

Donald Trump said the reconstruction of Gaza would start “very soon” as he hosted Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

The US president said he would “straighten out” details of the deal with the Israeli prime minister, who has been accused of dragging his feet over the peace process.

The talks on Monday were part of Mr Trump’s efforts to unstick the ceasefire agreement.

Speaking on the steps of his Florida residence, Mr Trump said he would try to kickstart the second phase of the peace deal, which includes the disarmament of Hamas, “as quickly as we can”.

“I think it’s going to begin pretty soon,” he told reporters on Monday. “Very quickly, as quickly as we can, but there has to be a disarmament, we have to disarm with Hamas.”

Mr Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Mr Netanyahu as progress in the fragile agreement between Israel and Hamas has repeatedly stalled.

More than two months after the US president travelled to Egypt to sign the Gaza peace agreement, crucial parts of the deal are yet to be implemented.

The first phase of the ceasefire included a partial Israeli withdrawal, an increase of aid and the exchange of hostages for Palestinian detainees and prisoners.

Mr Trump refused to clarify if Israel would withdraw from the strip as part of the required steps in the peace plan when asked on Monday evening. “Well, that’s a separate issue,” he said, without offering any further details.
