Spain reopens Tehran embassy

Spain has reopened its embassy in Tehran following a temporary reduction in diplomatic presence, the Spanish ambassador announced.

Antonio Sanchez-Benedito Gaspar said he returned to the Iranian capital with his diplomatic team to “join in efforts for peace from every possible quarter.”

The ambassador said the move follows instructions from the Spanish foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albares, as Madrid seeks to support de-escalation efforts in the Middle East.

Spain had temporarily scaled down its diplomatic operations in Iran earlier as fighting between the United States, Israel and Iran intensified.

The embassy closure came as several European nations reduced their presence in the region.
