A 16-year-old hiker got separated from their family as an approaching wildfire burned on a trail nearby in Washington, deputies said.
The wildfire was reported June 8 on the north shore of Lake Chelan, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. Deputies responded to the area by boat after there were reports of the fire crossing the Chelan Lakeshore Trail, where hikers were known to be. Authorities checked docks and helped seven hikers from Moore Point, a starting point for the trail.
As they did, they learned a 16-year-old had gotten split up from their family on the trail and was missing.
Another hiking group later sent a “satellite emergency activation” to Global Rescue saying the missing teen was with two other hikers, deputies said. Deputies said the group reported needing medical help near the Meadow Creek area, which is southeast of Moore Point. The teen was picked up by deputies in a boat and returned to their family at Prince Creek.
