President-elect Donald Trump said he would nominate Matthew Whitaker, a former acting attorney-general in his last administration, to be the US ambassador to Nato.
Trump’s choice reflected his emphasis on loyalty in staffing key roles in his new administration. It places the management of the US relationship with the key alliance under someone with little, if any, foreign policy experience.
“Matt is a strong warrior and loyal patriot, who will ensure the United States’ interests are advanced and defended. Matt will strengthen relationships with our Nato allies, and stand firm in the face of threats to peace and stability — He will put AMERICA FIRST,” Trump said in a statement.
