Donald Trump asked Republican senators vying for leadership of the upper chmber of Congress to allow him to appoint temporary cabinet members and bypass formal Senate approval through recess appointments in a Truth Social post on Sunday.
After officially winning all seven battleground states, Trump began exerting his influence over the race for Senate Majority Leader, asking that all three contenders agree with him about appointing people to his cabinet through the seldom-used process.
Senators John Cornyn of Texas, John Thune of South Dakota and Florida’s Rick Scott of Florida agreed.
The election to replace Mitch McConnell will be held on Wednesday November 13.
The president-elect has quickly begun preparing to take over the White House, first announcing that Susie Wiles, his campaign manager, would serve as his chief of staff. He also conducted phone calls with various world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
On Saturday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced President Joe Biden and Trump would meet at the White House this week, setting in motion transition plans between the administrations of the two longstanding political enemies.
