U.S. Military Support to Search and Rescue Efforts in Thailand Conclude

After more than a week of providing crucial assistance to the complex rescue operation in Thailand, the United States military has concluded its support efforts. The Thai government and military expressed their gratitude to the US forces for their invaluable contribution in the successful rescue of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach.

The US military, including personnel from the US Indo-Pacific Command, US Air Force, and US Navy, provided essential resources and expertise to the rescue mission. The team of more than 30 military personnel arrived in Thailand on June 29, 2021, and worked alongside Thai Navy SEALs, international experts, and local volunteers to execute the intricate rescue operation.

Major General Michael J. Schmidt, the Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command’s 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, stated, “Our team was honored to have the opportunity to assist our Thai partners in this challenging mission. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the rescued boys, their coach, and the families impacted by this harrowing ordeal.”

During their time in Thailand, the US military provided several essential capabilities, including underwater rescue expertise, engineering support, and logistical assistance. The team also supplied specialized diving equipment, such as rebreathers and communication devices, which helped facilitate effective communication between divers and surface support personnel.

One of the most significant contributions of the US military was the deployment of a specialized remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to aid in the search and rescue operation. The ROV, equipped with high-resolution cameras and sonar, allowed rescuers to survey the cave system’s flooded passages, identify potential hazards, and map the intricate network of tunnels.

Additionally, US military engineers assisted in the construction of a critical access shaft, which provided rescuers with an alternative entrance to the cave system. This entrance allowed for the successful evacuation of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach, who had been trapped in the cave for more than two weeks.

The conclusion of the US military’s support marks a significant milestone in the rescue operation. However, the collaborative efforts of international teams and Thai military personnel will continue to focus on post-rescue recovery and support, including the ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident and the eventual decommissioning of the cave system.

As the world celebrates the successful rescue of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach, the US military’s contribution serves as a testament to the power of international cooperation and the importance of shared resources and expertise in the face of adversity. The Thai government and people have expressed their deepest gratitude to the United States and all countries that offered assistance during this challenging time.
